Kastelik Władysaw
from Gilowice, born in 1919 – d. 2005
He was born on May 10, 1919 in Gilowice, where he lived and worked until his death on February 15, 2005. In childhood, he was peeling in wood for his friends, pipes and reeds. As a twelve-year-old boy, he constructed the first violin. He took up carving seriously in the 70s of the last century. The themes of his works were genre scenes from village life, fairytales, historical figures and demonology from old legends and fairy tales. He eagerly used natural shapes of roots and branches. He also made furniture and lamps decorated with regional motifs. He worked mainly in linden wood, using knives and chisels of his own product. He left the sculptures in the raw state, covered with polychrome in delicate pastel colors or stained.
Władysław Kastelik belonged to the Folk Artists' Association. Many times he participated in exhibitions and fairs of folk art organized as part of the Beskidy Highlanders' Week of Culture in Szczyrk, Wisła and Żywiec.
