Leštiny – The Wooden Articled Church

Leštiny – The Wooden Articled Church

Leštiny is one of the smallest villages and municipality in Dolný Kubín County. It is situated, at the foot of the Choč Mountains. It is quite easy to get to thermal baths or to artificial lakes from here (circa 20 km). There are also fantastic cycle tracks here. There are also a few historical manor houses.

The wooden church in Leštiny was built between 1688 and 1689. It is the oldest preserved Lutheran (articled) church built in Slovakia. It is located on a hill and from a distance, you can notice its simplicity but you shouldn’t judge the book by its cover. When you enter, the simplicity gives way to rich ornamentation. Variety of colours, shapes and themes tone in together creating incredible interior filled with old works of art originating in folklore.

The most valuable exhibit is a baptismal font dating back to the end of the 17th century. Our attention is also drawn to richly ornamented baroque ambo dating back to the beginning of the 18th century and the altar from the 19th century surrounded with beautiful wooden rails. The church benches with the crests are also precious objects not to mention the copies of the flags of the families who were the patrons of the temple.

Up till now, the building has been preserved in the natural environment and in the perfect condition. The church was included, along with seven wooden churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area, on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
