Porąbka – The Regional Chamber
The Regional Chamber in Porąbka was established by the Association of the Friends of the Żywiec Area in 1988. At present, it is a seat of the Association of the Friends of the Bielsko-Biała and Żywiec Area.
In a small room located in the Rural Commune Culture Centre visitors may see everyday objects such as flails, butter churns, a grain crusher, a stone mill, “putnia” boxes, bread baking tools. There are also looms, flax processing tools, wool and weaving demonstrations are organized here. They also exhibit elements of the horse-drawn cart made by the local craftsmen in the past. The real attractions are the works of the local artists, their paintings, folk sculptures, paper flowers, and wooden, painted toys. The original almost 100-year-old Lachy garments, however, are the most interesting exhibits especially bride’s clothes. There is a substantial collection of these. They have been renovated recently with the help of the EU funds. Unfortunately, the Chamber does not possess any men’s clothes.
The Chamber activists’ efforts lead to propagating the knowledge about local traditions through organizing periodical meetings and discussions for the youngest ones and they are called “Save from oblivion”. We can meet really fascinating people here who are truly dedicated to their local homeland and this is really valuable and inspiring.
