Rabčice – The Memorial Hall of the Rabčice Folklore

Rabčice – The Memorial Hall of the Rabčice Folklore

Rabčice is a Slovakian village situated near the polish border, between Námestovo and Oravská Polhora. In the school building, near the church, there is the Memorial Hall of the Rabčice Folklore which is dedicated to regional highlander culture. This is a consecutive place where the local traditions are preserved through memory and regional education.

In the Hall we can learn about the history and the activities of the local folk groups. Rabčičanka – a vocal group – was the first one established in 1973. Kašunka was a folk children’s group established in 1982, whose director was Valéria Baľáková – an expert on the local folklore. It is her, who attends the Memorial Hall opened here in 2016. The chronicles and photographs are collected here as well as the publications which were created in co-operation with the Orava Culture Centre (e.g. collection of songs “Echo from the foot of Babia hora”). We will also listen to very interesting stories.

The other collection consists the objects from old peasant houses including furniture, crockery, traditional, local handicraft, regional costumes, as well as a very interesting collection of shepherd bells. The oldest exhibit is over 100-year-old hope chest.
