Tvrdošín – The Stanislav Ondrík Workshop

A certain talented man, sculptor Stanislav Ondrík, lives and creates in Tvrdošín. In his workshop, he presents his sculptures made of different types of wood – populus, lime tree, sycamore, ash and fruit trees.

Stanislav is a self-taught man who started carving when he was a child. He started with ornamenting the sticks then walking sticks and this is how it started. He made toys and nativity scenes. As he says: “When I get the inspiration I entirely focus on the piece of wood that I have”. His wife confirms his words with a smile on her face and she adds that her husbands also paints very well. He however never paints his sculptures because it was not in the Oravian tradition.

He spends his days in his workshop. It takes him one day to one week to make one sculpture depending on the size of the piece of wood that he has. Family life is his favourite theme. Small and big pieces of wood turn into common people – most often working in the field.

When being around it is surely worth meeting this joyful person, seeing his sculptures and talking to him.
