Istebna – The Kawulok’s Hut
The Kavulok’s Hut, in which the regional chamber is located, was established in 1863 and belonged to the Kawulok family. Jan Kawulok was an exceptional musician, as well as an instrument constructor, a soloist of a group Koniaków, a storyteller, an expert and a promoter of regional culture. After his death, his daughter Zuzanna took over the charge of the hut. Zuzanna is a storyteller, a poet, a guide, an instrumentalist and a cultural manager. At present Janusz Macoszek, an amateur folklorist is in charge of the hut and he is a guide there.
He tells his stories about the local highlanders, quotes different anecdotes, he plays pastoral instruments such as ocarina which is made of clay, horn – used for informing about the danger, wooden reeds or gaida – traditional wind instrument found in highlander bands of the Silesian Beskids Region.
The chimney-less hut with a log frame structure, bedded on a stone underpinning, having a shingle roof, has two rooms separated by a hallway. The first white room was a representative space used for living purposes. Everyday life of the household was, on the other hand, lived in the other black room where traditional interior decoration can be seen along with household tools used in the past. There is a chimney-less stove (kurlawy) built here and it is responsible for the black colour of the walls due to the lack of the chimney. Why?
If you visit the charming place you will get to know this story as well as many other interesting stories. The Kawulok’s Hut is located on the Wooden Architecture Trail. It is, for sure, very interesting spot on the map when you travel across the Beskids Region and Janusz Macoszek presents folk stories and instruments in such an interesting, funny and most of all professional way that the door of the hut virtually is never shut.
