Podbiel – The historical reserve of the folk architecture Bobrova ral’a

In Podbiel we can come across exceptionally well preserved wooden development. The historical reserve of the folk architecture is called Bobrova ral’a. Wooden buildings are built along the main road opposite the Small Ethnographic Museum. It is the largest cluster of wooden houses with carved porches in Central Europe. They are built along the main road in a row with their narrower walls facing the road. They are built on low stone wall footing that will offset slightly terrain and insulate the wooden walls from moisture. The joints between the beams are stuffed with moss.

The buildings were acknowledged as a monument in 1977. It consists of 43 buildings dating back to the 19th century, out of which some are private properties and they are used for seasonal dwellings. The sight of these old houses incorporated in the landscape of a modern version of town is really intriguing.

It is also worth mentioning that the folk festival has been organised here for almost 20 years during which we can see primarily Oravian folk groups perform. Therefore apart from admiring old architecture we can also learn a bit about folklore and find some rest in the surrounding of a beautiful nature.
